An ambitious goal.

A team of Eighth Day Institute supporters have their sights set upon a $50k fundraising goal this summer as they train to run the Chicago Half Marathon/5k on September 29th. Director Erin Doom is inviting supporters from Wichita and throughout the country to join our team through donations/sponsorships, as well as by meeting up with us on the date of the event.

If you have benefited from the work of the Eighth Day Institute, would you partner with us as we work to revive our culture through faith and learning?

Erin's Story

For the last several years my wife and eldest son have been pushing me to get into shape. After living a sedentary lifestyle for over two decades, my weight had ballooned to 219 lbs. That’s more than sixty pounds over the ideal weight for a male my height. On multiple occasions since then, I’ve tried to heed their exhortations to lose weight through both exercise and diet. But they were always short-lived efforts that ended in failure. Until a year ago.

Why I'm running - Jesse Penna

With a strong desire to continue supporting EDI, coupled with a desire to put my own faith and learning in action, I decided through a conversation with Erin to do something I have NEVER done before, and start training for a half marathon! Since making that decision to run for renewal – both cultural renewal on behalf of EDI and personal renewal – I have enjoyed conversations with others as I have run and have also enjoyed the morning solitude as I watch the sunrise.

A NEW INITIATIVE

A Word from the Fathers
Monthly Print Edition
This publication has existed for years, but we are preparing to send a print edition out monthly to members. It will include short homilies, treatises, and hymns penned by the holy fathers of the undivided Church. We'll be emending and amplifying this publication by adding introductory material on the life, history, and theology of the author of the patristic text. And we'll include a study guide and questions. Our hope is for this publication to provide parents, teachers, ministers, and other leaders material to introduce the common Tradition of the early Church to their families, students, and parishioners.

01 The Details

On September 29, Anno Domini 2019, Team EDI will run the 23rd annual Hoka One One Chicago Half Marathon & 5K. We'll meet up in Chicago on Saturday, September 28, run on Sunday morning, and then enjoy Chicago and fellowship Sunday evening and part of Monday.

02 The Cause

In lieu of Eighth Day Institute's annual summer fundraising drive, the EDI running team will be raising funds to support our various efforts to renew culture through faith and learning: Inklings Oktoberfest, Eighth Day Symposium, Florovsky-Newman Week, Synaxis, Word from the Fathers, Hall of Men, Sisters of Sophia, et al.

03 The Course

This scenic half marathon course starts in Historic Jackson Park, site of the 1893 World Columbian Exposition, and winds through the beautiful Hyde Park neighborhood and University of Chicago campus. The course then takes runners along Chicago’s south Lake Shore Drive, taking in the views of Lake Michigan, Chicago skyline and the Science and Industry Museum campus before a triumphant finish at the golden Statue of the Republic.

"Wichita is the place where contemporary saints mingle with the saints of old. It’s an absolutely lovely place, where the line between heaven and earth becomes strangely thin."
